Workday Preparation
When you come out for a trail workday, be prepared for the conditions and a good hike. Some volunteers bring a change of clothes, especially during the hot summer months. In cooler weather, dress in multiple thin layers to better regulate your temperature. When it is dry, we usually do a group ride after the trail work is done (and sometimes one before as well). So bring your bike gear. CAMBr will be able to supply you with any hand tools needed. Remember to not over-exert yourself in extreme heat, use tools safely, and only use tools you are comfortable with. One thing to be careful of is poison ivy, though simple precautions will protect you most of the time.

The important stuff:
• Insect repellant
• Leather work gloves
• Hard-soled boots
• Long pants (Protection from ticks)
• Hat (Protection from branch tips and thorns)
• Protective eyewear (Protection from branch tips and thorns)
• Hydration pack (water bottles get lost)
• Hooded raincoat (if the forecast dictates)

And don't forget that every volunteer working in the Cook County preserves must sign an annual waiver.

2008-06-28Plainfield Bike Park WorkdayWe are working at the park this weekend since the grand opening is canceled.  An auger mini-skid steer thing is being rented to so we can install the rest of the fence.  If we have enough people, we might work on the pump track or some other things that need to be done.

We have some left over burgers and dogs from the REI workday and will take a break and grill for lunch.  Anyone who needs to is free to leave after lunch, but anyone who wants to stay can.  I'm sure it will be a long workday trying to get the rest of the fence in.  We might even have to work on Sunday if we don't get the fence done (we have the auger machine until Monday morning).  Monster knows about the workday and will be out there if they can, but no guarantees.

2008-12-06SWK WorkdayTrail workday in December?! Well if the weather's not well below freezing and the ground's not knee-deep in snow it's actually pretty easy to keep warm. If you're moving around, you'll find you might even need to vent some heat.

So we have an extension worked out for the middle of Colossus that lets us ride this trail backwards (as opposed to riding your bike backwards!) without needing to walk up the two steep climbs – unless you're one of those Pedal and Spoke guys who laughs at "steep." We could really use a hand to get this project done as quick as possible, given that setting a December date is a crapshoot and we'll need hopefully just two to finish the job. Most of the work should just be lopping branches. Come on out, beat your chest and show Mother Nature that you're not to be taken lightly in the manhood department!

The restoration group has been upset about the mountain bike use along the creek. One of the reasons is an endangered plant that is being monitored. During last summer mtn bikers had rerouted a trail along the creek to ride through the endangered plant, this plant was in a small confined area and was being monitored for propagation Riders diverted from the existing trail through the middle of this plant destroying some.

My thought was to try and make amends(it's easier to work with friends) by reconfigure the trail to insure the trail stays away from this plant.  I have permission from the FP work on a more stable and permanent solution to this trail.
